PostSubject: Thinking of breeding my tiels...   Wed Aug 15, 2012 12:05 am

I had a bad experience that stopped me from hobby breeding Cinny and Sugar in the past. But now I feel like I'm ready to do it again. I've gotten rid of the supposed problem (a home made breeding cage that was toxic to the babies) and even if something does happen, I will be prepared this time. The reasons I want to breed are, I see other peoples baby birds and it makes me miss the amazing experience of raising babies. Also both my pairs every spring look everywhere for nest sites and are so desperate to have babies, I feel bad stopping them from raising a family. Last, I realized that if I breed and sell the babies this fall, it could help me raise money for my horse. I am almost done painting the bird room and then my tiels will be free flighted in there. It is a large bedroom (mine but I think I'm going to move my bed out so the birds will have more room) and I will be growing two dwarf fruit trees in there to make it more forest like! There are perches and playstands everywhere plus a dead tree in the middle. I would colony breed, so both pairs would have a nest on either side of the room and I would put the nests high up on desks or something. I don't hand feed babies, I train them once or twice a day from the time they are 2 weeks old, to the time they find homes. This way I can still raise excellent hand tame babies, without having to go through all the trouble of hand feeding. I have an unused nest and I'll be buying another one this week (if I decide I'll do it). So, what do you think? Do you think I should give it a go? I'm nervous but excited at the same time!

I think I will! I'll start them in two weeks probably. I need a week to finish my bird room and a week to let them settle in before I put up the nests.

Yes yes yes! It's a go! Better keep us update...or I will be after you..Wink

That's what I mean by a bird room! Everyone means putting all cages inane room, but I mean the birds actually having the room, with perches in the walls (somehow) and trees and things. You have my dream room!Laughing

Very Happy Yep! I haven't set up the room yet but I will next week! My four tiels, two keets, and eventually my green cheek conure will live in there. My mitred and amazon will stay out but I'm working on plans for a big out of cage play area for Juni and Tico already doesn't live in a cage.
