Before breeding..there are a few things to think about

MANY UN-WANTED COCKATIELS

There are many many un-wanted all over the world. By breeding you are creating the chance for a new owner to get a new baby instead of adopting, or even possibly adding to the un-wanted number. Just think about this.

YOU ARE RISKING THE LIVES OF YOUR BREEDING BIRDS

When a pair breeds, they risk their lives. Females can become egg bound, along with other problems. Both genders spend lots of energy caring for chicks.

VETRERINARY BILLS

When something happens to a chick or a parent, you will need to get vet care. Vet bills can go to hundreds of dollars. When breeding you are really stretching your risks. Be careful not to breed until you are sure you can afford this.

MIGHT HAVE TO HANDFEED

Sometimes a parent(s) will attach chicks, or simply ignore them. This is when you have to step in and handfeed the chicks. Hand feeding is a dangerous and time consuming task. Be sure you are prepared to do this in case.

FINDING GOOD HOMES

You will always go to the point when the time comes for the chicks to find new homes. But you want to make sure you find GOOD and SAFE homes for your chicks. You will need to ask many questions to potential owners. And advertising will be another task.

Now that you have read these and are aware of each and everyone of them... And you are still looking to breed...go ahead.Smile

There is definitely a risk to breeding cockatiels. I breed Cinny and Sugar twice. The first time, two babies lived but Pearl got severely sick and would have died if I wasn't prepared and didn't know how to hand feed. The second time no babies lived. It is devastating to see babies not make it after coming so far. I personally can't handle losing them so I haven't breed since. Sad Breeders have to realize that it is a natural part of the circle of life for babies to die so they have to be prepared for the loss of lives if they want to breed.
